Gameplay

In Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, the action is viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP). During gameplay, players explore a fantasy land, meet the inhabitants of the game world, engage in conversations, and complete quests for them. This gradually advances the story.

While there's plenty of combat with the titular monsters, the opportunities for interacting with them don't end there. Many creatures can be tamed (they become "Monsties") and used on the battlefield as support, or transformed into mounts on which players can explore locations.

During turn-based battles, we use our character's weapons and combat skills, and also utilize the strengths of their monstrous allies. As we progress, we develop our hero and his monsters and collect increasingly better equipment.

Plot

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection takes us to the heart of a simmering conflict between two fantasy lands – Azuria and Vermeil, which are on the brink of destruction. After twin Rathalos hatch from a mysterious egg bearing markings that portend destruction, war seems inevitable.

The game's protagonist is the heir of Azuria, leader of the Guardians and the only Rathalos Rider. In search of the truth, the protagonist sets out for a forbidden land beyond northern Meridian. Accompanying him is Eleanor, Princess Vermeil, who, seeking to ease tensions between the kingdoms, willingly surrendered to Azuria as a hostage.

Graphics

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection was the first time I truly felt like this series had leaped into the top tier. The leap over previous installments isn't just about higher resolution—it's about a completely different level of detail and framing. The world is denser, richer in backgrounds, and locations no longer look like empty arenas filled with just a monster and a chest containing a reward. We get a fully-fledged fantasy kingdom, where architecture, vegetation, sky, and weather effects all work together, instead of just being pretty wallpapers. It's clear that Capcom has stopped considering the limitations of previous platforms and has finally allowed itself the desired scale.

The style itself has also changed significantly. It's still a colorful, anime-inspired Monster Hunter Stories, but the overall experience is noticeably more mature – the character models are more polished, and the animations in dialogue and cutscenes no longer feel like a "cheaper" version of a major JRPG. Faces react to events, eyes are alive, and the camerawork truly heightens the emotions in important scenes. The monsters, in turn, finally look like the stars of the title: their silhouettes are clear, the textures of their armor and fur do a great job, and their elemental attacks can illuminate the screen. At the same time, we're systematically fed with cutscenes that look like full-fledged anime – this game looks truly beautiful.

On PS5 Pro, the overall experience is complemented by a very high frame rate, which perfectly complements the dynamic combat. In performance-focused mode, the game runs at 100-120 FPS, so the monster animations, camera jumps, special effects explosions, and all the spectacular combinations involving the hero and beast are truly impressive. Without a doubt, I can say that Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is the most beautiful installment in the series and the first time a Monster Hunter spin-off has visually stood shoulder to shoulder with the genre's larger productions.
