USS Thomas Tucker

Olifantsbos Beach, Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, South Africa.

The USS Thomas T. Tucker (built 1942), was an American supply ship that ferried troops and supplies during World War II.

During this period, the Cape coast was actively patroled by German U-boats, forcing ships to travel in dangerously shallow water close to the coast.

Whilst navigating in heavy fog, the ship ran aground on rocks near Olifantsbos, but luckily all crew members were saved. Subsequent investigation found that the ships navigation compass was out by 37°.

Worsening conditions prevented the ship from being rescued, the decaying remains now lie scattered along Olifantsbos beach.

This is the first ship along the Shipwreck Trail, the Nolloth wrecked in 1965 is further round the coast.
