My Father's family came from Scotland/Ireland by way of England (after several years in the printing business). In 1674 part of the family settled in the Carolina Colonies for religious freedoms. The rest came over to the Colonies after going bankrupt after failing to copyright their rights for printing a little book known as "pilgrims Progress". Later after one third of the family foufht for the Revoltion and one third for the King of England and the other third holding to their religious neautrality to war. After one of the "rebels" was hanged as a spy on Kings Mountain, the other members had their lands confiscated by the Continental Congress even though the family had pledge alligence to them after the death of lad; the family moved to the State of Georgia. Then later the family moved to Winston County Alabama during the time of the War Between the States in the 1860s. As followers of the governmental principles set for by President Jefferson the family moved to the only County in the South who refused to cecede from the Union and that being the "Free State of Winston" as it would be known to be called even to this day. During that war, some of the family served and died for the Confederate States and some became Scouts for the Union Army. This photo taken during the later days of that War are my 4th grandfather on my father's grandmother's side. As for My Mother's side of the family they were of Scotch and German decent who came to this country during and shortly after the "War of Aggression as it is known by many Southerners.
