Pumping the Tank

Portola Valley, CA

A stinky but necessary job.
Depending on usage and number of people in residence, septic tanks need to be pumped out to remove accumulated sledge periodically

You will note that there are two holes here.
The one closest to the residence is the main tank.
That were the effluent goes first and where bacteria action takes place to break down materials naturally.

The overflow, mostly liquid, accumulates in the second tank.
From here the effluent flows out into the drain field.

Oh boy, this needs to go on that Discovery Channel show called Dirty Jobs. Just kidding, I have heard that it's not that bad. I feel like having a septic tank would be nice in the event of a natural disaster because if you are not on the city plumbing then there is nothing to worry about probably. I am new to this so I don't know anything for sure, but that is what it seems like to me. How much does it cost to have a septic tank installed in your backyard, on average? That is something I would be interested in for my new house most likely.http://www.claggett.net/services-septic.html
