I'm a HUGE fan of Oscar Wilde so I was dying to try a drink at the bar of the famous hotel in which he died.
His famous last words here were "either that wallpaper goes or I do!"
Back in his day, this hotel was a cheap dive known as the Hotel d'Alsace.
It was much cheaper than his previous hotel which is now known as the Hotel du Quai Voltaire (19 Quai Voltaire) where he quipped "I'm dying beyond my means."
So they moved him here instead.
Nowadays, L'Hotel is an upscale hotel catering to the likes of rock stars & famous actors.
In fact, in the bar you'll see photos of Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, Rober de Niro & Milla Jovovich (who is married to her "Fifth Element" director,
Luc Besson, who incidentally directed "Nikita" which has a scene at Le Train Bleu where I spent my last dinner).
The couple you see seated at the bar were from South Carolina, had a time share in N'awlins (as they told me),
were well-traveled, intellectual, interesting and were a very nice couple indeed (they picked up my bar tab)!
