Natalie Barney's Home

20 rue Jacob

Natalie Barney was famous for her literary salons in the 1920s that rivaled Gertrude Stein's.
In fact, James Joyce refused to attend Stein's but was often seen at Barney's.
Hemingway was often a frequent visitor here as well.

It is behind this apartment building that Natalie Barney's pavilion
stood and next to it her Greek "Temple of Friendship".

Nice Web site! I'm a huge fan of Natalie Barney. I want to start a salon in Lincoln City, Oregon. I have the perfect idyllic location for the afternoon teas a la rive gauche.

Question: did Natalie die on rue Jacob, or was she forced to move to a Parisian suburb near the end of her life? Merci!

One gazes in wonder and imagines Natalie, Romaine, Dolly, Djuna, Eyre, Janet and all the Academie Des Femmes, their art and conversation, their amours and Berthe's Poulet Maryland steaming on the table! They don't make legends like that anymore! So sad the temple has gone, but at least the stories remain!

Natalie's famous Greek temple is no longer in place. In fact, the previous trip I'd tried to take a photo of the garden but it is now overgrown, overlooked and neglected. Disappointing, really.
