Rabbit Hash was founded around 1813 and sits on the banks of the Ohio River across from Rising Sun, Indiana.
It is one of only a few remaining early 19th century towns along the 981 miles of the Ohio. Because of its shallow water and a huge nearby sandbar, it never came to be an important steamboat port like Rising Sun, but it did have its own ferry service.
Rabbit Hash's mayor is a black lab who unfortunately was not sleeping on the porch of the general store on the day we visited.
One other historic note: This community was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
