Driving the National Pike

Funkstown, MD

America's first interstate highway and first to be built with federal funds, the National Pike generally follows U.S. 40 today from Baltimore to St. Louis. The road was authorized by Congress in 1806 during Thomas Jefferson's administration.
Affectionately known as the "Old Pike", the road today is celebrated with festivities in many communities through which it passes.
