There's quite a story of how these life-life statues of our President were created. This particular one shows him as a 19 year-old surveyor when he had all his teeth. He was an unusually tall man for his time. Most accounts say he was 6'2".
On this day of our visit I think every school in Virginia decided to go there for a field trip, making it very hard to get to the other 2 statues: 45 year-old George as Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Army and the 57 year-old George as he looked on the day he was sworn in as President (and had only 1 tooth left in his mouth).
The creators of these statues were amazed at the facial and bone changes in George's face as he aged due to the loss of his teeth and bone. (Supposedly the troubles started from an early habit of cracking open walnuts with his teeth.)
The idea behind the creation of these statues was to allow us to view Washington as he appeared throughout his life and not to think of him only as the stern-looking older man we often see in paintings and on our dollar bills.
