Bonneville Dam

40 miles from Portland

Built in 1938, it's not the largest dam on the Columbia River, but it's the first of 8 connecting Oregon and Washington.
US Corps of Engineers operate the dam for hydropower production, fish and wildlife protection, recreation and navigation and the supply of inexpensive electricity.
Named for Benjamin Bonneville, a French-born US Army officer who is credited for mapping out much of the Oregon Trail.
