Lewis and Clark's Fort Rock Camp

along Bargeway Rd. in The Dalles

Lewis and Clark camped here in October 1805 and again in April 1806 for a total of about 6 days. It's nestled low among many protective rocks right on the bank of the Columbia.
On the day I visited, an archaeologist was digging pit holes and sifting through dirt. I asked about her work and she said they were looking for artifacts from their campsite and were hoping to find bones or evidence of a campfire. What was interesting is that someone had put 6 feet of fill over the original site long ago so they were having to dig deep to reach the ground level of the campsite. All items found will be placed in the Discovery Museum.
