Dame-Dalton House

Main Street in Parowan

While visiting Parowan, I read about this house in the "Parowan, Utah...Rich in Heritage, Recreation, and Natural Beauty" visitor's guide: "This is a typical early-styled adobe polygamist home. It was built for the first mayor, William Dame, who sold it to Edward Dalton. The home still belongs to the descendants of Dalton's two wives with the dividing property line going through the middle of the home separating the front half from the back half. One wife's family owns the front of the home and yard on the south side, and the other wife's family owns the back of the home and the yard on the north side."

When the Mormon Church banned polygamy, Dalton refused to give up his two wives so the marshal set out to arrest him. Failing that, he lay in wait for Dalton and shot him in the back as he rode his horse herding livestock down the streets of Parowan. Neighbors carried him to a nearby porch where he died. The year was 1886.
