This stone pyramid is about 60 feet high and was built in the late 1870's. Inside are remnants of the war including bullets and part of Stonewall Jackson's jacket worn when he was shot at Chancellorsville. The laying of the capstone at the very top was a dangerous job. A prisoner won his freedom by agreeing to climb to the top to successfully place the stone.
The memorial overlooks the part of the cemetery where 18,000 Confederate soldiers were laid to rest.
