Tumco-Hedges Ghost Town

Tumco in Imperial County

Gold has been mined in this part of California for over 300 years. Here at the Tumco Mine, gold was found anew in 1884 and the town of Hedges grew up around it and thrived from 1893 to 1899. It was renamed Tumco and worked from 1910 to 1941. In the distance in the above photo are metal leaching vats used in the gold mining operation.
Tumco-Hedges has long been called a California ghost town and is a Registered California Historical Landmark.
