This is one of the most beautifully restored army posts in Arizona. The original one has been torn down and the one standing today is the rebuilt post dating back to 1869. The fort's soldiers were engaged in battles with Indians and protected local gold miners. Named after Gen. Amiel Weeks Whipple who died in the Battle of Chancellorsville.
The quarters shown in this photo probably date back to 1905 and are being used as residences.
In 1922 the fort was transferred over to the US Government and today is a VA Hospital for northern Arizonans.
Listed on National Register of Historic Places
Interesting note: Fiorello LaGuardia, noted mayor of New York City, lived at Fort Whipple during the time his father was the bandmaster.
