Dove of the Desert

Tohono O'odham Reservation

The beautiful Mission San Xavier del Bac, affectionately known as the "Dove of the Desert" was built during 1783-1794 under the guidance of Fathers Juan Bautista Velderrain and Juan Bautista Llorenz. An outstanding example of mission architecture, the labor used to build the church is believed to have been provided by the Tohono O'odham, on whose land the church resides.
The church is currently undergoing major restoration.

As of April the scaffolding was still up on the west side. The scaffolding was supposed to come down for a period of time allowing people to see the church and be photographed before the next and last 2 year work period on the east begins.

Is the restoration complete yet? We were ther in July 2004 and Ms Price's photo is almost identical to one of mine. It would be great to see what it looks like when the restoration is finished.
