Tucson General Hospital

3838 N. Campbell

The 106-bed hospital's construction began in 1963 and used solar designs. University Medical Center bought the bankrupt hospital in 2001.
It is currently undergoing demolition and will reopen as the new Arizona Cancer Center in 2006 serving as a complete center for outpatients. The present cancer center will serve as a research only facility.

I was born here in 1962, and later worked here as an ambulance attendant.

I was born here in 1967. So the building must have been pretty new then.

The sunshades (the triangular shaped "hoods" on the windows) were saved by an organization called MAPP (Modern Architecture Preservation Program). We are now seeking any architect(s) who may be able to use them on a project, preferably to stay in Tucson. If anyone has questions or could use them, please contact Catherine at 360-1531. We are going to be moving them soon to a new storage facility.

Two of my children were born in the tiny original Tucson General Hospital, one in 1953 and the other in 1955. One birth cost $75 and the second birth cost $125.
