Near the site of this memorial in October 1940, cowboy movie star Tom Mix was driving his white Cord convertible when he suddenly came upon bridge construction. Swerving the car off the road to avoid the construction, a piece of luggage on the trunk of the car flew off and hit him in the head killing him instantly.
His horse, Tony, was as popular and well-loved as Tom. As for Tom, "...he loved horses, knew how to ride, and was a marvelous showman."
Note: Tom was a pallbearer at Wyatt Earp's funeral.
