The University of Arizona's first permanent structure, built in 1891 by James Creighton, Old Main was almost demolished in the 1960s. Concerned citizens rallied and helped establish one of the nation's first National Register of Historic Districts for a university campus. 35 other buildings are now protected.
Gen. John J. Pershing was present when Old Main officially opened.
