San Diego County's second oldest business, the Salt Works has been retrieving salt from the sea using the same methods of evaporation pools dating back to 1878.
The plant and pools sit on the edge of San Diego Bay and is considered a landmark in the Chula Vista area. Its old weather-beaten buildings and equipment are beloved by many in the community and talk of shutting it down has generated much discussion. There are groups who would like to see the area returned to his natural wetlands condition and perhaps save a small part of the historic plant as well.
