Mennonites came to Santa Cruz several decades ago from Canada, Mexico, and other countries in South America. Most speak low German or Russian as their primary language and Spanish as a second language. The majority of them are agriculturalists living in isolated rural colonies.
The "Russian" Mennonites never spoke Russian as their first language, even when they were living in Russia. Some spoke it as second language. They adopted also some Russian words into their low German dialect, but that 's all. When they left Russia, the next generation did not learn any Russian.

Most of the Mennonites in Bolivia speak a dialect called Plautdietsch, a version of German mixed with dialects their predecessors from Russia.

Beautiful photos. Unique dress among the women, with the ribboned hats.
