Something charming about the old switch.. takes us back in time, almost expect to see kids from the old days walking along those rails, carefree like they used to be .. ah the good old days

Without this manual switch .... there may be a lot of accidents on these rails!

I don't think so. The mechanism is for the "derail" on the right. Assuming the main track is on the left, anything on the siding heading towards the switch on the curve will go off the track in this position. Throwing the lever towards the viewer, will move the points of the derail to the right, allowing a train to go onto the main. It is a "fail safe" mechanism, not a redundant one.
