As a child, I used to play in the woods with the neighborhood kids. We'd often take
bag lunches and cans of soda so that we could be there all day.
Today, Doug and I explored Hart's Woods here in Perinton, NY. The Town of Perinton's website
states "Hart’s Woods has been recognized as a unique setting and is registered as a National
Natural Landmark. Though small at 10 acres, it is a rare undeveloped remnant Beech-Maple-Oak
forest, with 80-90 foot canopy and some individual trees of 2 feet DBH [Diameter at Breast
Height, here in the US 4.5 ft (1.37 m) above ground] and 250 years of age.
Fun fact: Beech reproduce best in the shade of a Maple, and Maple best in the shade of a Beech.
As a result, which of the two is dominant in a given forest oscillates from generation to generation.
