Bushnell's Basin, NY (about 3 miles from my house)
The Erie Canal has played an important part in the history of this area. It runs about 363 miles (584 km) from Albany, New York, on the Hudson River to Buffalo, New York, at Lake Erie, completing a navigable water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. The canal contains 36 locks and encompasses a total elevation differential of approximately 565 ft. (169 m). It was also very important to the development of the Midwest United States. Today it is mainly used for recreation. It is open from May till November each year. The boat pictured is a dinner/sightseeing cruise through a portion of the canal and some of the locks. There is also a great path along this stretch of the canal that is used by walkers, runners and bicyclists.
