Wilsons Phalarope (male) (20D) IMG_9301_filtered post.jpg

This photo was taken on the road to Bear River Wildlife Refuge in July 2005. I saw him amongst the tall grass right along side of the road. I was thinking it was a little early for a male to be there as I snapped the shot. Then he flew. Immediately thereafter I spotted two balls of fluff about two feet away. I quickly realized that they were baby Wilson's Phalaropes (the male raises the young in this species). I could have taken the time to snap a quick shot of the young for documentation, but with the male flying away I did not want to take any chances that I would contaminate the area further with my presence. It just is not worth the photo if a living thing might stand the chance of dying because of it.
