The structure is across the Kinabatangan River from the Abai Jungle Lodge and houses nest sites for the birds
whose nests are collected and sold for bird's nest soup, a delicacy in Asia, especially China. Speakers broadcast
swiftlet calls to entice the birds into the structure. This provides and income source for area residents.
There are dozens of these structures along the Kinabatangan River. Swiftlet nests are known
to have been collected from Kinabatangan area caves since about the mid-1300s.
