The change from diesel to steam is necessary because the ensuing grade is too steep for diesel
engines to make the pull back up to Coonoor. The steam engine takes the train down-slope so it
can bring the train back up the mountain to Coonoor. Once at Coonoor a diesel engine can once
again continue the train back to Ooty.
