When first developed, they were over designed and with the better modern materials of today, they are most reliable. They have grown a bit since the 1900's and the shanks and methods of attaching them to the cars have also improved.

I look at those trains and wonder about the couplings. They don't look that different from older engines, but the load must be many time greater, why don't they snap?
