Avila de los Caballeros (Latin: Abila and Obila) is a town in the south of Old Castile, the capital of the province of the same name. The city is placed at 1.117 meters, the highest capital in Spain. It is built on the flat summit of a rocky hill. The ancient city walls of Avila, constructed of brown granite, and surmounted by a breastwork, with eighty-six towers and nine gateways, are still in excellent repair; but a large part of the city lies beyond their circuit. Avila is the seat of a bishop, and contains several ecclesiastical buildings of high interest. The town is renowned for Teresa of Avila, the Carmelite reformer who lived there.
