Dead as a...

I was out for a walk in a remote location today, when I saw this strange bird.
I managed to get close enough for a picture, before it hid in the scrub.
It was about the size of a turkey and couldn't fly. Any birders out there know what it was?

And last year I was in the same area but didn't see the bird then.
