Nigeria Co-Operative Women Alliance African Catfish Fingerling Production Workshop

The Nigeria Co-operative Women Alliance (NICOWA) empowers women in Nigeria by focusing on self-reliance through the benefits of local women's co-peratives, but tied together into a national organization with more than 100,000 members. One of these efforts is to promote home-based fish production for food and income. African mud catfish, Clarias gariepinus, is an excellent choice for this as an accessory breathing organ allows them to use atmospheric oxygen and many fish can be raised in a very small area. However, catfish don't want to spawn under these conditions so the women have had to rely in the past on fingerling producers who generally target those who will buy in larger quantities the the women need. The need for a workshop to teach the women how to produce the fingerlings they need themselves was met my the United States Agency for International Development's (USAID) Farmer-to-Farmer program through Winrock International which contacted me, as a fish culture volunteer, to conduct the workshop in September 2015. These are pictures from that workshop where more than 120 NICOWA chapters were represented.
