This species, when it gains access to ponds, competes with tilapia for food and reproduces filling the pond with unmarketable fish like this which is the average adult size for this species. As the carrying capacity of a pond is limited, the more nutrients that go into this species, the less is available for marketable sized tilapia. Thus it is important to keep this fish and other trash fish out of the pond.
