Looking at the gill rakers of the first gill arch

The numbers and spacing of gill rakers on the first gill arch helps to determine the feeding habits of the fish. Tilapia have many closely packed gill rakers because they feed on phytoplankton and zooplankton. Different gill raker counts helps to identify different species of tilapia. Predatory fish have fewer gill rakers because it takes fewer to direct larger prey into their throat.
