Using ink to add contrast to the genital area of a tilapia makes it easier to separate males from females, but with practice, not ink should be necessary. While practicing, the student determines the sex of the fish based on what they see after painting the genital area and then opens the fish up to reveal ovaries or testes to ground truth whether they were right.
