Netting material from which this seine was made was purchased in Maputo, the Mozambique capitol. Floats and weights were added by SDAE - Chibuto staff. This mesh size (2.54 cm) is large enough to let water and oxygen, feces, and other wastes out, so creating in-pond, off-bottom net pens from this material will allow harvest of all fish stocked into the net pens, but also make the fish more vulnerable to thieves. There is a security guard for this area anyway, so this should not be a problem. If both males and females are stocked into such net pens, the eggs from any spawning that occurs will fall through the bottom of the net pen before the female can retrieve them and brood them in her mouth, thus preventing effective reproduction. Fish cultured in this manner need not be males only as preventing reproduction allows the females to grow almost as fast as the males.
