Azolla sp. (A. pinnata?) in a pond at IIP

Use of Azolla as fish feed has had mixed results so far, but as it has a symbiotic relationship with a blue-green algae (which tilapia like) and is relatively high in protein for a plant it theoretically should work well, whether fed directly to fish or ground into a pelleted feed. Rice-Azolla-tilapia co-culture seems to produce higher yields of rice and tilapia than simple rice-tilapia alone. Incorporated into feed as an ingredient to replace fish meal has given mixed results.
