Cashew is the wood of choice for smoking in this area. Ultimately, using a fruit-bearing hardwood tree to smoke fish provides a better product worldwide, at least generally speaking. Seems logical to me that if a tree provides something you can eat, it is unlikely to have something poisonous in its wood that would make it unsuitable for use to smoke food.
