Carp pituitaries have been used for many years to inject into other fishes to make them spawn. The pituitary lies at the base of the brain just above the roof of the mouth and can be difficult to access. This gallery shows how to get the pituitary quickly with an electric drill (I will use a cordless drill the next time). All of the fish were killed by bleeding in ice water prior to removing the brains, so were quite dead before brain surgery. I dry these pituitaries in acetone and then take them with me to Africa where I rehydrate them in a saline solution and then inject them into African catfish. This causes their eggs to mature and the fish is ready to spawn in less than a day. I teach people how to do this who can get more pituitaries from local fish where artificial hormones are not available.
