The plant was introduced to Sacndinavia from England or the Netherlands in the 17 century. Introduced to Sweeden in 1654 at Uppsala University, by Olaus Rudbeck (after whom the genus Rubeckia was named by Linnaeus). From the Uppsala University botanical gardens it spread freely throughout the Uppsala area. First noted in Norway in 1694, probably from spreading or introduction from Sweden.
