Bruce, Belinda, and Dave "paddle" the Bone River, off Willapa Bay. SW Washington. Early settler James Swan spent three years ensconced in a small cabin on a 300 acre homestead at the mouth, mid-1800's. The Bone is a protected natural area, and very scenic, especially at high tide. We were seduced into a megaportage across an elk-poop-decorated tide flat. Thanks to Bruce's hot tea, we survived a cold rain.
Vulgar boatmen get a workout.
Bruce mugs at the launch site, just off Highway 101, where the Bone meets Willapa Bay.
Belinda girds for launch, same site.
I went off the main stem to pee. The others followed; their reward was a portage across an acre of elk poop.
It's a race; Bruce is losing on speed, but has better form.
Taunting slow Bruce.
Reaching open water.
After punching through snags and brush to the headwaters, a re-launch in cold rain after lunch.
