The Kapiti Coast is on the North Island of New Zealand about 70 kms north of Wellington, the capital city. The area is dominated by Kapiti Island which is a nature reserve 5 kms off the coast. It is 10 kms by about 2 kms wide. The highest point is 520 meters above sea level. It is home to many native bird species that are rare or extinct on the mainland.
