The Lord Howe Island Wood hen is a flightless bird. It is on the endangered species list with only 300 birds on this island in the world in existence. 40 years ago only 12 pairs remained until they were bred in captivity. The introduced rats off a sinking ship ravaged the island over many years. An active rat extermination program is also in place on the Island.
