Princess Hang Li Poh was a bride from the Ming emperor to Sultan Mansor Shah as a gift to seal relations between the two countries in the mid-15 century. The sultan established Bukit Cina (or China Hill) as the princess' residence and the well as a gift to her. The well, also used by the townspeople, was a prime target for attacks. Johor poisoned it in 1551 and killed 200 Portuguese Today, the well has acquired a new status as a wishing well. It is said that anyone who throws a coin into it will return to Melaka again and again.
