SOU 19700920 017 MKO 4501 nb Natural Bridge w.jpgUnder the guidance of the late Graham Claytor, the Southern Railway, one of the first major railroads to completely dieselize, began to return steam locomotives to operation. This tremendously popular program helped create this image at Natural Bridge, Virginia on September 20, 1970. The Mikado 2-8-2 4501 is running northbound over the James River and the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. The tracks are owned by future merger partner Norfolk & Western. I can't be sure, but that may well be Graham Claytor himself in the car in the suit and tie. |
BARF I - 1971At Elmhurst, PA while awaiting arrival of the Nickel Plate Berkshire 759, we determined to remember the moment in photos. In the over four decades since this shot was made, never have we had the entire mob together again. The pressure on the solar system was simply too great. |

Central of Georgia Athens Georgia 1968The Central of Georgia Macon to Athens line used to see the through freight come up to Athens in the morning. The local crew would then work the line before returning to Athens for the mainline run to Macon. Here we see the local job working the University of Georgia coal-fired power plant before heading south down to Watkinsville. |
