A room with a view......through our open shutters and over the terra cotta roofs and golden walls, narrow cobbled streets, houses positioned down the slopes, distant views of green and blue hills, tall dark Tuscan cypreses, church spires and bell towers.
Our first taste of Siena. Incredibly old and beautiful.
The stunning centrepiece is the Piazza del Campo,a huge semi-circular sloping expanse of brick paving, surrounded by grand ancient buildings, most with a ristorante at ground level, with beautifully set tables and a menu to peruse. At various points around the piazza are entrance lanes or stairs leading back to the intriguing cobbled streets. The focal building on the Piazza del Campo is the Palazzo Pubblico with a central courtyard from which soars the tall bell tower, the Torre del Mangia.
