Touring from Victoria to South Australia and back, we followed the Murray River for as much of the journey as were able. We have seen the Murray in many places in the past, more often upstream in the east but this time we drove through what is called the "Riverlands" from Swan Hill, Victoria, crossing into South Australia, and then across the Murray River by chain ferry at Morgan. Here we left the river to continue on to our destination in the Clare Valley, South Australia.
"The Murray is Australia's longest river. It rises in the Australian Alps, draining the western side of Australia's highest mountains, and then meanders across Australia's inland plains, forming the border between the states of New South Wales and Victoria as it flows to the northwest into South Australia. It turns south at Morgan for its final 315 km, reaching the ocean at Lake Alexandrina." Wikepedia
The Murray River basin includes its tributaries in Victoria and the NSW basin of the Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers which flow from there and Queensland and are often dry or struggling for water, as now. Much of Australia relies on artesian water.
