A short 3 day getaway to this charming and historic town which lies at the end of Victoria's Great Ocean Road and famed Shipwreck Coast. With its maritime history as a busy trading port in the 1850's and many fine examples of 1800s architecture with pretty, fully restored white-washed cottages built by whalers and seamen beside Georgian-style merchants' homes and grand public buildings, it is now a popular holiday destination. There is an early Irish history, evident now in names of streets and buildings.
Fisherman's Wharf Marina on the River Moyne, quiet estuary beaches and the wild Southern Ocean provide much to explore.
Having experienced The Great Ocean Road many times, and for a faster journey, we took the inland road to Port Fairy, through what is known as Victoria's Western District; rich farming land, wheat, sheep and cattle and renowned for dairy produce.
