On our second day in Germany, 2017, when staying in the beautiful city of Regensburg, we took an all day cruise up the River Danube, through the greenest of farmlands and forests, viewed from mirror still waters, to Kellheim, where we changed to a smaller cruise boat which was able to navigate the narrower arm of the river through limestone crags and cliffs, winding eventually to Weltenburg Kloster (Monastery) where we alighted for over an hour to explore this ancient place.
It is famous for the brewery and the unique beer it produces. But, there is also an old and lovely church which we entered and I saw the BEST interior - decor, painted ceilings and beautiful fittings - of any of all the lovely churches and cathedrals we have looked at in Europe. We respected the notices requesting "No Photography".
I thought the first part of our river journey very slow, two and a half hours, but realise now that we were waiting for a HUGE cruise boat to pass through the lock and, in hindsight, the mirror calm river was truly lovely.
Along the river we saw many people enjoying small beaches, sunbathing, swimming, boating and on the pathways, cycling. Many people take their bicycles on board one way and cycle the other.
