In this small area of England, just as it is all over the country, there are many hundreds of preserved castles, grand houses, halls and estates, even Roman and Saxon ruins and relics, admirably restored and presented to the public as a testimony to life in past centuries. During our stay in the West Midlands and surrounding counties we've visited just a handful, as we've done at other times in other parts of the United Kingdom.
Haddon Hall on the River Wye in Derbyshire, the most perfect English House to survive from the Middle Ages.
Witley Court and Church, on the River Severn, near Worcester, in its hey-day one of England's great country houses, hosting many a lavish party. Burnt in a fire in 1937, today it is a beautiful ruin, set in spectacular gardens.
Himley Hall and Park, former estate of Lord Dudley, now a public parkland, lake and civic amenity.
Harvington Hall and St Mary's Church in Worcestershire, an Elizabethan moated mansion house, with parts reconstructed about 1756 with Georgian staircase and windows, it still contains secret 'priest holes', a malting house, herbal knot garden and a camouflaged Catholic chapel.
