Just a three night get away from Melbourne to the town of Echuca, an historic river port on the Murray River, Australia's longest river and which forms most of the border between Victoria and New South Wales. The grand buildings of the last century are a legacy of a once thriving inland port for transportation of primary products - wool, wheat, timber and building materials for the new colonies of Victoria and New South Wales.
The mighty river red gums which tower above the river banks and wetlands are a reminder of the timber industry which also flourished here in the previous centuries.
Today Echuca offers an historic waterfront and a reproduced old main street, attracts families for holidays, boating enthusiasts and fishermen and, we have found, has fine dining and quality local produce.
